About the Event

Coastal ecosystems are under increasing threat from over-fishing, pollution and climate change. Fortunately, the Lyme Bay marine protected area demonstrates a number of success stories where local communities are being empowered to manage, protect their coastal environment. Underpinned by world-leading research and facilitated by the Blue Marine Foundation, lessons from Lyme Bay show us the power of what can happen when scientists, communities, policymakers and visitors work together.

The event: This event will count as one of 'The Great Big Green Week' events in the area. Dr Adam Rees will talk about the challenges and successes of Lyme Bay Marine Protected Area coupled with a video presentation within the centre and then walk to the quayside with the attendees, at which point he will continue his talk. This will be an accessible walk.

Meeting: Everyone will meet at The West Bay Discovery Centre (The Chapel on the Beach, W Bay Rd, West Bay, Bridport DT6 4EN) at 10:30am

Our talker: Adam is a marine biologist based at the University of Plymouth and works with the Blue Marine Foundation, a marine environmental charity. His research focusses on the impacts of human activities on protected marine habitats, in particular the impact of commercial fisheries on the seabed. He has been involved with the Lyme Bay reef recovery monitoring project since 2010. He has also contributed to research on the impacts of marine renewable installations and marine litter. He completed my PhD which looked at impacts of commercial crab and lobster potting on important ecosystems within the Lyme Bay Marine Protected Area.
